Making the Best of Your Colicky Baby

Almost every baby has bouts of crying and fussiness here and there. But, a colicky baby is a much different story, as any parent who has dealt with one will tell you! Colic is really nothing more than abdominal pain, usually associated with gas or some type of obstruction in the intestines. Unfortunately, it can be extremely painful for babies, causing them to cry for long periods of time.

So, what can you do to soothe your colicky baby, giving them some relief and allowing yourself to get some sleep? Let’s take a look at a few tips!

Practice the “Colic Carry”

The goal is to give your baby a bit of relief from gas bubbles. Carrying them a certain way can really help to alleviate their pain. The “colic carry” is as simple as positioning your little one on your forearm, so they’re laying on their stomach. You can support their head with your hand. It’s a simple maneuver that can make a big difference!

Reduce Stimulation

Keeping your baby as calm as possible can actually help to soothe them. It may not take away the pain, but if you can calm them down enough by reducing things like outside noise, lights, etc., they may be able to get some rest.

Additionally, you might want to try playing some white noise. Something as simple as the sound of rain or a soft static can help to soothe a baby.

Give Them a Massage

Sometimes, a gentle massage can help to ease the gas bubbles in your baby’s abdomen. Lay your little one on their tummy, and gently rub their back to alleviate some of the pain. You can also try “pedaling” their legs slowly, to help your baby release some of that pent-up gas!

Dealing with a colicky baby isn’t easy for anyone, and no one wants to see their child in any kind of pain. But, by using these simple tips, you can bring them some comfort, and find some relief, yourself!
