There is a local classic rock radio station near our home that uses the slogan “The Soundtrack Of Our Lives.” One morning as I was tuned in, it occurred to me that this motto is incredibly true.
Music is, in fact the soundtrack of our life. It continually plays in the background of our minds. It colors our moods and enhances or memories. It creates nostalgia and helps to ingrain life’s special moments into our personalities.
Can you recall an event in your life that was accompanied or enhanced by a song? What was the first album you purchased with your own money? How old were you at the first concert you attended? What music were you listening to when your child was born?
When I was about four years old, I was obsessed with the song “Betty Davis Eyes” by Kim Carnes. Of course being that little I had no idea what the song was about, but I insisted on singing it to anyone who would listen. I loved her smokey, gravelly voice, and I loved belting it out during dinner parties. My family still laughs about it today, and it still makes me giggle 33 years later.
Music makes a permanent mark on us that lasts forever. Let’s do our best as parents to create loving memories like these in our kids.
