Winter is finally upon us, and that means cold and flu season is in full swing. No one wants their children to suffer by getting the flu, or spending days miserable in bed.

Wash Their Hands

Hand washing is probably the most important and effective way to fight off the flu. Have your kids wash their hands with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds after playing with toys, sneezing, using a tissue, and before they eat.

One good rule of thumb is to have your child sing “Happy Birthday” twice while washing their hands. It’s a great way to make sure they’ve washed long enough to get rid of cold and flu germs.

Avoid Sharing Drinks

Kids like to share food and drinks, and can even end up drinking from the same cup/straw half the time. Try to prevent drink-sharing as much as possible. During flu season, it’s an easy way to catch harmful germs. But, it can also lead to more harmful conditions later on in life, such as meningitis. Letting your child know it’s not okay to share sippy cups or straws now will help them develop healthier food and drink-sharing habits later on in life.

Eat, Sleep, and Exercise

One of the best ways to keep your child healthy this winter is to practice a healthy lifestyle! Don’t wait for them to get sick in order to start eating and drinking right and making sure they get enough sleep.

A healthy, balanced diet, regular exercise, and several hours of solid sleep each night will boost your child’s immune system naturally. That makes it easier for them to fight off harmful flu symptoms.

By keeping these tips in mind, your child will be at a lower risk for getting the flu this season, so they can have fun and feel great all winter long.
